Are your insect light traps working effectively? Guide to Insect Light Trap Maintenance and Effective Use
It is the season when insects are flying and factories and restaurants must be more careful about hygiene control.
Many factories, supermarkets, and restaurants have already installed insect traps.
However, when we visit some sites, we are worried about whether they are being used effectively or not.
In some cases, we find that the tapes and lamps have not been changed since the first installation of the insect light traps.
Here are some tips on how to properly use your insect light traps.

1. Do you replace the glue tape regularly?
When the lifespan of Mushipon’s glue tape expires, its adhesive strength to trap insects will weaken, so it should be replaced when its lifespan expires. Mushipon’s glue tape has a long life span, and can be used for 5 years unopened, and for 2-3 years after opening without deterioration. It should also be replaced when there are so many insects trapped and there is no more area left to catch insects.
The best way to use the glue tape is to replace it periodically, such as every month, to monitor the insect infestation and invasion status.
By recording the monitoring results, you can also use it for HACCP.
2. Even if the lamp is on, the life of the lamp may be expired!
The life span differs depending on model of the lamp.
For example, the FL-20SBL lamp used in the most popular MPX-2000 series has a lifespan of 5,000 hours (about six months when the lamp is turned on for 24 hours).
The inconvenient part of knowing when to change the lamp is that “life expired” does not mean that the lamp no longer lights up.
You might think, “Well, it’s still lighting up, so it must be OK,” but this is not correct.
In the case of UV lamp for insect light traps, the lamp will continue to light up even after the lamp’s life has expired. However, the lamp will no longer emit ultraviolet light that attracts insects.
The ultraviolet ray that attracts insects is invisible to the human eye. There are cases in which lamps continue to be used while the lamps are still lighting but have already reached the end of their life span and are no longer effective in attracting insects.
We recommend that when you replace the UV lamps, you note the date of replacement or when the lamps will need to be replaced next time.
3. Are your insect light traps installed too high?
We often find that insect light traps are installed in locations that are too high.
If they are installed too high, it becomes difficult to change both the lamps and tapes of the insect traps, and it becomes a troublesome task.
To begin with, small winged insects often fly in areas less than 2.0 m and do not fly very high.
We suggest that you review the location of your insect light traps too high.
